Interventional Cardiology

Home / Interventional Cardiology

Interventional cardiology is the subspecialty of cardiology that deals specifically with the catheter- based treatment of heart diseases. The field includes the diagnosis and treatment of coronary artery disease, vascular disease and acquired structural heart disease. As opposed to preventive or non-invasive treatments such as lifestyle changes and most imaging techniques, interventional cardiology deals specifically with more invasive treatments, often through catheters and stenting. It also helps to avoid surgery with treatments like angioplasty and valve repair or replacement. Non-invasive cardiology is not always sufficient to address cardiac conditions and in most cases, patients are referred to an interventional cardiologist who then focuses on the diagnosis and treatment abnormalities in the arteries and chambers of the heart by resorting to a procedure called cardiac catheterisation.

The specificity of cardiac catheterisation is that, instead of resorting to “open” surgery, the interventional cardiologist inserts a long thin tube called a catheter into an artery or vein through a small incision. Cardiac Catheterisation is much less invasive than open surgery, which has four main benefits:

  1. The procedure is generally performed under local anaesthesia.
  2. The recovery time is cut down from weeks to a few days at most.
  3. The risk of complications is reduced dramatically.
  4. Scarring is minimal or even absent.

These procedures are performed in our well-equipped Digital Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory and the Department of Interventional Cardiology has advanced facilities backed by a team of highly-qualified interventionalists who are well experienced in all the relevant interventional techniques. Our Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory has for the last decade helped a large volume of patients, performing minimally invasive tests and procedures on high spec equipment to diagnose and treat cardiovascular disease. The hospital ensures comprehensive patient care during and after the procedure with latest monitoring facilities and one to one nursing in the Cardiac Care Unit.
